Experience Counts

Years of understanding power applications at Niche makes all the difference

Much of what yields success in high-power electronics comes down to understanding the needs, not just buying the right equipment. The experts have a knowledge of the thermal characteristics of dense, high-current-carrying assemblies like those used in the automotive, defense, energy, and medical fields.

Niche Electronics’s original owners and founders came from an industrial motor control company where they gained a background in the design and manufacture of industrial inverters. That experience provided a wealth of valuable knowledge around high power, thermal management and a number of other real-world applications.

That experience formed a foundation for important processes that have been part of Niche since its first day:

  • circuit cleanliness
  • heat management
  • proper isolation techniques
  • proper insulation techniques

Niche also understands vibration mitigation for large and heavy components that often have limited mechanical strength due to their mass. The company is well-versed in how critical it is to design and manufacture power engineering components for harsh operating environments where reliability is paramount.

These types of applications typically require heavy copper pours and large copper masses within the circuit assemblies, creating significant thermal challenges throughout the manufacturing process. The key is developing a repeatable process around thermal management to ensure consistent results.

While knowing the process is the most important element, the equipment does have to support the process. The most important requirement is having reflow ovens capable of reaching and maintaining profiles suitable for the mass of these assemblies.

These process foundations, and Niche’s commitment to staying current with industry expectation and equipment, have established Niche as experts in the thermal management and power electronics sectors long before data centers made those proficiencies a recent front-page topic.

Strength in Diversity

When it comes to an overarching business strategy, EMS providers have to make one critical decision: diversification or specialization? From the very beginning, Niche Electronics has chosen to diversify, and that continues to serve customers well in different industries, and across a wide range of products.
